PUMA 700XLY - A story of an infinite length lathe...

While visiting the factory, in the large lathes assembling hall, we had an unexpected surprise ...

This is a true story. About a year ago, I went with a client to DOOSAN factory to perform an acceptance test for Computer Numeric Control (CNC). We were accompanied by the company`s personnel on a tour of the factory and there, in the large lathes assembling hall (from the series PUMA600\700\800), I had an unexpected surprise…
As known, in factories similar to DOOSAN, the machines are produced in a final assembly line containing a line of stations, in which there are 20 stations from process starting point till the end. The machines are arranged in a long line and go through all stations – starting the first station which includes foundry and other parts for assembly, all the way to the final stop from which the machine leaves for packaging after the final inspections.
We entered the production hall, walking along all stations. When we got to the last one, we have discovered a strange phenomenon - a lathe, in the middle of the assembly process, located at a 90 degrees angle relatively to the other machines in the assembly line. I tried to ask our host for the meaning and when pressurizing him, I was told it is a new model of lathe, still under development. Since I never got a proper answer when I asked what was so special about this particular lathe, I decided to check it closely. The first thing I noticed was its extraordinary length, going much beyond the 1,600 or 3,200 mm conventional lengths so far. After unsuccessful attempts to reveal the intriguing data, I started counting steps, starting at the sting to the tip the machine - one, two, three ... not over? I counted six steps when my eyes came across a Korean written poster with the number 5,200 on it. Finally, my Korean host admitted this is a lathe with an engraving length of 5,200 mm, including an option for turret milling and y-axis.
I smiled and noted that DOOSAN continues to send tsunami waves, striking the Japanese and the European machine industries. After watching the Corporate video in the company`s auditorium, we immediately realized the need to develop the sophisticated and long model. To the best of our knowledge, there are no other manufacturers in the world who made an effort to develop a lathe model with a sloping bed and a y-axis milling capacity in such length.

In Israel, many PUMA lathes with a 3,200 mm engraving length were sold up-to-date. As experts in this domain, we believe such a unique machine entering our country will make a significant breakthrough. Certainly, DOOSAN can pull off a surprise!
